Towards a Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus index: A review of nutrient profile models as a fundamental pillar of food and nutrition security

The Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus approach should be promoted as a tool for sustainable management of resources through the interconnection these three fundamental pillars. Particularly, food security must ensure healthy and balanced diets everyone, but selecting individual indicators to assess all slants covered by this element is not an easy task. Hence, objective paper two-fold, review nutrient profiling (NP) models that allow categorize foods evaluate based on their nutritional quality, choose most appropriate model used within WEF index. To address issue, total 159 documents were assessed, appraising geographic distribution, time evolution publications, well characteristics potential applications NP systems. concludes NRF9.3. liable option in index, presenting best means definition scores thresholds, use ‘across-the-board’ criteria reference quantity 100 kcal, alongside offering higher ability than other competitive (HEI) evaluation nutrients encourage instead foods. A secondary outcome identification useful enable institutions with information establish policies field public health facilitating decision-making process according current claims. • Literature regarding reviewed.
